Step One:Water hibiscus when the soil is dry to the touch. The roots must remain constantly moist, but not wet. Well-drained soil is key.
Step Two:Fertilize hibiscus every 3 weeks with a low nitrogen fertilizer (0-10-10) applied at 1/2 the label recommendation during the spring and summer. Phosphorous and potassium, the last two numbers on the fertilizer label, encourage flower production and root growth.
Step Three:Tip prune hibiscus to keep the plants bushy and full of blooms. Pinch off the tips of branches to encourage multiple growth tips further down the stem. Step Four:Apply a layer of organic mulch under plants to prevent moisture loss and weed growth.
Step Five:Apply a high nitrogen fertilizer at 1/2 strength when leaf color fades. Yellow leaves indicate a hungry plant or under-watering. The foliage should be a deep glossy green. An application of a balanced slow release fertilizer in the spring will encourage new growth.
Step Six:Remove faded flowers to keep plants looking tidy. Grooming also discourages insect pests by eliminating their hiding places.
Step Seven:Protect hibiscus from cold weather. Move plants grown in containers to a protected area. Plants grown in the ground should be covered if temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
Step Eight:Apply an anti-transpirant to protect plants from excessive heat or cold. Cloud Cover is a product which prevents moisture loss through the foliage due to transpiration.
Step Nine:Watch closely for insect pests. White fly, aphid, scale and mealy bug are notorious for dining on hibiscus. Use an insecticidal soap to treat unwanted pests.

How long do Hibiscus flowers last??
or how long are they supposed to? i have a hibiscus plant, and the flowers all die after 24 hours :(
is this normal? or should i be concerned?

The flowers last from a few hours to several days depending on the species of Hibiscus (200-220). I hope it helps.

Reply:No one seems to have a picture of it. It is a registered cultivar but there is almost no other information available. None of the hibiscus databases have any information other than that it was registered when the database was started.
It is not known what color it is, which cultivars were used to hybridize it, who hybridized, where it originated or even where it is found. This is from the International Hibiscus Society.

I just purchased 2 hibiscus trees and reside in connecticut, can these trees be planted in the ground?
I have my hibiscus trees planted in containers and used miracle grow potting soil what other fertilizer will i need. i am reading on care for these trees and i am getting alot of diffrent care tips, they are about 3 feet tall and the trunk inter twines(like rope)
I just purchased 2 hibiscus trees and reside in connecticut, can these trees be planted in the ground?
id advise to leave in pots due to your needing to take them indoors come winter, frost will kill them.
Reply:It depends on the type. There are tropical hibiscus and hardy hibiscus. The tropical would die once Fall comes if planted outside.
Reply:I had some of these. Notice the word "had". An early frost last year killed them. They are not very hardy and must be brought into the house for the winter. You can plant them but expect to dig them well before frost and have to put them in a larger pot than the one they are in now.

There are two different types of hibiscus plants however, and only one type is hardy. You can take the tab back to the place you bought it and ask if it will over winter.
I have a beautiful one in back and I live in Michigan. It comes back bigger and more glorious every year.
My mother likes the annual type and just keeps hers in pots.
She brings them in over the winter and they mearly have leaves. She usually has pretty good luck with this.
Reply:i live in the south. here if you plant the tropical hibiscus in the ground, they will die in winter as they are only cold hardy to about 40 degrees. rose of sharon or swamp hibiscus are shrubs, and perennials, respectively, and will be fine in winter. it sounds to me, however, that you have the tropical kind. the "braided' hibiscus will last until first frost. if you winterize these, you need to give them ample sun, and mist the foliage regularly. it will probably lose foliage being indoor, and next spring when you pop em outside may not bloom until may or june. also, you will probably have to keep repotting them as well.

Since you did not mention any problem with your hibiscus plant, u need to check these specifications for your plant. if your plant fullfills these requirements then your hibiscus will bloom happily.
