How can I get my hibiscus bush to grow more flowers?

My hibiscus bush has mostly green leaves but many branches are bare of leaves. It has harldly any flowers. I water almost every day. It used to overflow with flowers. It sits in the sun almost all day. Am I watering too much or not enough?

How can I get my hibiscus bush to grow more flowers?
Actually, watering only has partly to do with it. Flowers on the hibiscus only grow on the new growth for each year. If you want loads of flowers, then just before the leaves fall in september, go around and trim the taller branches. Even if winter kills some of the old branches, the new growth that results, just gives more flowers. Just be careful of all those seeds after the flowers!
Reply:Bone meal! In pellets or liquid form. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, anywhere!

How can I keep my Hibiscus trees alive during the winter?

I live in Missouri so we get really cold winters. I have two Hibiscus trees in pots. How do I keep them alive for next summer?

How can I keep my Hibiscus trees alive during the winter?
Hi Heidi, I have over wintered mine by letting them go dormant in a garage where the temp does not freeze. Tropical plants have problems even when the temp dips into the low 40s. If you have a storage room off the garage the plants would do well there. DO NOT fertilize until you are ready to move them out for the summer. Osmocote is a great slow release fertilizer to use in the spring. You will need to water the pots a couple of times during the winter. Water sparingly you don't want the plants standing in a wet soil. The leaves will drop and you may want to do a little judicious pruning before you "winterize" them.

Take care and good luck,

Phillip
Reply:Move them inside. I keep mine in my garage, but I live in OK, so a bit warmer. Temp stays above freezing in there-- use a compact flourescent light and leave it on most of the day for a light source. Plants will lose a lot of leaves, but survive ok. Better of Course to put them in a sunny window.
Reply:best thing to do is to bring them inside...but if you can't do that, then try insulating them when it freezes with garbage bags or sheets...or if you have room in your garage, that should do the trick too. they won't bloom, but should keep them alive for next year.

How do you make jam out of a hibiscus?

I am talking about a hibiscus specie called hibiscus rosa-sinensis. What parts of it can be used to make jam and how do you do it? Do you need to extract it or pound it?

How do you make jam out of a hibiscus?
JAM

1 kg of hibiscus fruit - remove the seed pods so just the calyces remain.

Add 3 cups of water and boil until tender, about 20 minutes.

Add the juice of 3 lemons and 1 kg of sugar.

Boil until the mixture thickens, for about 20 minutes.

NOTE: Some Breadmakers make jam and we adapted the ingredients to make jam in the Breadmaker: 500g of chopped calyces; approximately 3 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water; 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of commercial jam setting mixture.

Many recipes recommend covering the seed-pods with water and boiling until soft. This liquid is then strained off and added to the calyxes which are simmered gently until they soften. This is then measured and a cup of sugar is added for each cup of fruit. It is stirred until the sugar is dissolved and then brought to the boil.

How can I grow hibiscus in the best manner?

I have 50 cuttings of hibiscus rosa-sinesis and I don't know how to grow it properly. Should I place it under a shade or under the heat of the sun? How many times should I water it in a day? And what can I do so that it could maintain its good condition?

How can I grow hibiscus in the best manner?
They need warmth. Lots of warmth and sun. Good potting soil, not too dense. Don't over fertilize, twice a week should be good with liquid fertilizer..you can get especially for tropical plants. Keep it watered everyday. Do not let it dry out. Don't put in the shade at all. If you have a propagation house or mat to place them on would be great. Water very often and keep them warm..Until they root and are stable. Then you can re-pot and grow like anything else that you propagate.
Reply:You can't kill those things, love alot of sun and water, grow like crazy. I have 50 around my house, ran some down with mower and pulled some out to replant, keeps on growing. I'm in S. Fl.

How do I care for my Hibiscus?

2 years ago I planted a small Hibiscus and it seemed to do quite well. Last year some neighbor children pulled a good part of it out of the ground, but it has decided to come back this Spring. It is only about 5 inches tall but seems very healthy. What type of fertilizer is best to use on a Hibiscus and does it need any specific type of care?

How do I care for my Hibiscus?
most likely ur talking about the hardy type! just feed it a balanced fertilizer now and keep it moist throughout the growing season. the hardy hibiscus is also called "swamp rose".... so it loves to be wet!
Reply:We'd need more information. There are a number of species of hibiscus, including tropical ones (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis of Hawiian shirt fame) to very hardy ones (Hibiscus syriacus or Rose of Sharon).

It would also help to know what USDA zone you live in or what area you live in.

Without that information I can't give you any reliable advice other than they do like compost or other organic matter mixed in the with soil they are planted in and most like a lot of water.
Reply:hibiscus need moderate water and leave misting they like sun (full sun) they bloom best in warm climates....here in florida every house has some very popular in the warm climates
Reply:Either use ozmocote, a general all purpose fertilizer, or use a fertilizer that is for acid loving plants. I've had hibiscus for years and have rarely fertilized them. They get huge and flower almost all year anyway. I did mulch them very well a few years ago. One is at least 8 ft tall.

What could be added to a hibiscus flower tattoo?
You could get it with a hummingbird or get words in hawaiian like "ola" which means to live/be alive and "aloha" which is love, or "nani" which means beautiful...

Reply:Given the Polynesian nature of the hibiscus, I'd recommend looking into some tiki and Polynesian designs.

This does NOT mean "generic black tribal" - this is more like sleek woodgrain stuff. And woodgrain can look hell of good if you've got a talented artist behind the needle.

How much do hibiscus flowers cost?

I'm looking to buy my girlfriend some hibiscus flowers, no real occasion or anything, and I just want to get her a few, because they're going to be given with other things. I live in Massachusetts, if that has any effect of the value.

I'm looking more for individual flowers, instead of any arrangement.

How much do hibiscus flowers cost?
You have to go to your local shops and find out.... but I agree, buy her the plant, as the flowers don't last long at all after being cut. My husband bought me two of them, one red and one pink with a red throat, and I have enjoyed flower after flower since. I bought my mother one for Mother's day, I payed 17.00 for it at Lowes. A few days later my husband and I stumbled upon them at Walmart for 9.99... what a deal!
Reply:Mannliz is onto the right idea - since hibiscus flowers, when picked, don't last long at all, and that way she can look at the plant in full flower all the time.

They do well in pots as well, and you get some really stunning colors. They're not expensive.
Reply:BUY THE PLANT AND SHE WILL HAVE FLOWERS ALL YEAR ROUND,I HAVE A DOZEN OR SO PLANTS AND THE FLOWERS ARE ASOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL ALL YEAR ROUND.

Why the hibiscus flower is called a Chinese Hibiscus?
It is believed to be native to China and came to the world by way of the South Pacific and Hawaii. Little is known about the early history of tropical hibiscus.

Hibiscus???

What exactly is the etymology of "hibiscus"? I looked it up, and I found out it basically means "a mallow plant" but what the hell is a mallow plant? I want to know because I know a person named Hibiscus.

Hibiscus???
Hibiscus is a unique flower.
Reply:I would assume that a person named "Hibiscus" is named after the flower. Sort of like "Daisy" or "Rose" :-)

1706, from L. hibiscum "marshmallow plant," perhaps from Gaulish.

rose

O.E. rose, from L. rosa (cf. It., Sp. rosa, Fr. rose; also source of Du. roos, Ger. Rose, Swed. ros, etc.), probably via It. and Gk. dialects from Gk. rhodon "rose" (Aeolic wrodon), ult. from Pers. *vrda-. But cf. Tucker: "The rose was a special growth of Macedonia %26amp; the Thracian region as well as of Persia, %26amp; the Lat. %26amp; Gk. names prob. came from a Thraco-Phrygian source." Aramaic warda is from O.Pers.; the modern Pers. cognate, via the usual sound changes, is gul, source of Turk. gül "rose." The ultimate source of all this may be PIE *wrdho- "thorn, bramble." Used of a color since 1530. In English civil wars of 15c., the white rose was the badge of the House of York, the red of its rival Lancaster. Rose-water is attested from 1398. Rose-colored "optimistic" is first recorded 1854. In the fig. sense, bed of roses is from 1593. Rosy in the sense of "cheerful" is first recorded 1775; meaning "promising" is from 1887. Rose of Sharon (Song of Sol. ii.1) is attested from 1611 and named for the fertile strip of coastal Palestine. The flower has not been identified; used in U.S. since 1847 of the Syrian hibiscus.
Reply:If she's named Hibiscus, she is likely named after the flower. See link below for a picture.
Reply:Family Malvaceae (order Malvales), which contains about 95 genera of herbs, shrubs, and small trees.

Mallow species occur in all but the coldest parts of the world, but they are most numerous in the tropics. Hairs that branch into starlike patterns commonly cover some or most vegetative (nonflower) parts of these plants. The flowers are regular and often showy. Cotton is the most important member of the family economically. The green fruits of okra are edible. Many species are valued as ornamentals, including hollyhock and rose of Sharon.
