I live in NE Ohio and we have had both cold %26amp; warm weather this spring.
Bought my hibiscus last summer. Looks dead since winter - like twigs. Will it rebloom or should i give up?
Are you sure that the plant was winter tolerant? Many Hibiscus' are tropical only and will winter only in house or greenhouse.
Reply:I had two hibiscus plants, the first one, i let go into the winter on my deck not doing a thing to it and it bloomed the next summer. The second one, i took in the house and it died and never came back to life. I think if you had it in a somewhat protected area, it might stand a chance. Just keep watering it for awhile, you may see sprouts yet.
Reply:I'm not sure about the climate in Ohio, but in South Texas I prune mine back after the last cool spell. But our cold weather here only lasts about 2 months and we rarely have a freeze. Mine look like sticks right now also, but probably because I haven't pruned this year (laziness), and Hibiscus is prone to root rot here. Try pruning, they may just come back. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:most are an annual in ohio...unless it is a hardy hibiscuz. which are just coming up right now.especially in cleveland. they arent even growing well there yet.
Reply:I live in a very hot climate and some of my hibiscus is the same. Give them some TLC and I think they like fertilizer with acid. They also like to be on full sun.
Good luck!
Reply:I'm in zone 5 in new york. don't give up. it's probably still alive. hibiscus, and rose of sharon (same family) are very late to come up in the spring/early summer. give it time.
Reply:Check the largest stem, scratch it a little to see if it's still alive. Also, check the roots to see if they are dry. If dry or too soggy, the plant is dead. But, don't throw it away yet. Water, or let it dry more, and check again in a week or so. It might still be alive.
Reply:Thre are 2 kinds of Hibiscus plants. Tropical and Hardy. In Texas I can put the tropical variety in the garage and in the Spring put it outside. It will come back. If you leave it out all Winter a new one is required. Ohio gets colder than Texas. I assume it is dead. Hardy variety usually makes it outdoors all Winter
